If getting an RV inspection from a Certified or Master Certified RV Inspector wasn’t important enough, now there is an RV recall for several thousand RVs that may have LP leaks. Trained RV inspectors test for propane leaks as part of their RV inspection. Propane is a deadly gas that can easily ignite and possibly suffocate you in your sleep.
As master-certified RV inspectors, Jason and Lisa Carletti carry three manometers on their RV inspection vehicle. If a test fails, they will use multiple manometers to prove there is truly a propane leak and is not a result of faulty equipment.
Many dealerships are trying to sell RVs as fast as possible and things like this can get missed prior to purchase. Protect your family by slowing the process down and hiring a qualified RV inspector who has your back and isn’t protecting the bottom line of the RV dealership.
Recalls from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued recalls involving cracked and porous LP Gas Fittings that are extremely dangerous and could potentially cause catastrophic outcomes.
22,021 RVs with model years 2021 and 2022 from 8 RV manufacturers and 37 different models have RV propane components made by Texas based Flex Tech, which also has a plant in Goshen, IN.
These components were made with contaminated brass that can result in LP gas leaks and, a gas leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
While the brass fittings may appear perfectly normal, the contamination created “porosity” in the metal. This may cause Life-Safety issues when the fitting is torqued down, it can crack and LP gas may escape.
Huge problems can occur for thousands of RV owners when one company makes the same exact part for a lot of RV manufacturers and defects in the components are discovered.
Federal Recall personnel at NHTSA, the federal agency in charge of vehicle safety recalls, announced the recalls quietly and it’s been said that recall notices are not scheduled to go out until July 1st, putting thousands of RVers at risk.
Cracked LP (Propane) Gas Quick Disconnect Fitting - What to do about the recall
To find any recall for your RV, just do a search for the model year, make, model, and add the word “recall” or the recall number below.
Dealers will inspect and replace the fittings, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in July 2022.
As you can imagine, this is going to put additional stress on the dealerships that are already backed up with appointments being made several months in advance.
Until RV owners can get their rigs inspected, it’s vital to test your LP Gas detector to be sure it’s working properly.
As Master certified RV inspectors, we can’t stress enough how important a working Propane detector is to the safety of your family and pets lives.
We’ve seen many detectors that have been disconnected from the 12-volt battery because it keeps alarming.
If an RV LP Gas detector has gone into alarm, you must act on the situation quickly to keep your family and pets safe.
It may be as simple as replacing the detector because sometimes those components fail, too.
